    This 14 page movie guide with handouts is for the film "October Sky (1999)". This guide will also work well as a sub plan for your substitute teacher.

    PART 1 – Comprehension questions. I have made three sets of questions for differentiation or depending on how much of a challenge you want to give the students. The multiple choice questions have also worked well with my ESL students. Answer keys included.

    • 40 questions requiring full sentence answers.

    • 25 questions requiring full sentence answers (15 removed from the 40 question set)

    • 24 multiple choice questions with 3 possible answers (Q25 requires a full sentence answer)

    PART 2 – Creative writing

    • Students to write a newspaper article about Homer winning at the National Science Fair. Needs to include a drawing.

    • Students to design and label a rocket site similar to the one Homer and his friends had made. They then need to write in detail the setup and a recount of a launch.

    PART 3 – Storyboard and Synopsis

    • Students to draw a 9 scene storyboard of what they believe to be the most important parts in the movie. To include a brief description for each scene. Remind students they can look at the movie questions to remind them of the sequences

    • Synopsis. Using their storyboards as guides, students to write a synopsis of the movie.

    Based on Homer Hickam's memoir Rocket Boys, the movie follows the true story of Homer in his determination to build and launch his own rocket with the help of three friends. Unfortunately, most of the town and especially Homer's father thinks that they are wasting their time.

    • Students to imagine Walter needs their help and to design a non-lethal gadget. Students have to describe and draw the gadget as well as describe and draw it in action

    • Students to imagine they are secret agents and have been turned into an animal by Walter. They then go onto describe themselves as an animal and create a drawing. They then write an imaginary mission they have completed where they need to explain how the unique skills and abilities of the animal helped them.

    Loosely based on the animated short film Pigeon: Impossible, the movie is about a super spy called Lance Sterling and scientist Walter Beckett. When Agent Sterling is turned into a pigeon by one of Walter's non-lethal gadgets, the two must work together in saving the world.
