This guide may also work well as a sub plan for your substitute teacher.
PRE-VIEWING – Teacher direction (including example answers)
- Guide a short discussion to activate prior knowledge about WWII perspectives. Explain that this movie shows the war through the eyes of a German teenager, not soldiers. Encourage students to consider how perspective shapes history and to predict the pressures young people might face under a dictatorship.
PART 1 – Comprehension questions in chronological order. I have made three sets for differentiation. The multiple-choice questions may also work well with ESL/ELL students. Answer keys included.
- 45 questions requiring full sentence answers.
- 30 questions requiring full sentence answers (15 removed from the 45-question set)
- 30 multiple choice questions with 3 possible answers.
PART 2 – Discussion questions (pair work). Example answers included.
- Students work in pairs to answer four critical-thinking questions related to the movie, society and their predictions.
- After the students have finished their work, come together as a class to discuss and debate each question.
PART 3 – Storyboard and synopsis
- Students to create a 9-scene storyboard, illustrating pivotal events from the movie. Each scene should include a short description explaining the main idea it represents. Use the movie questions to guide sequencing.
- Using their storyboards as guides, students to write a synopsis of the movie.
PART 4 – Character mind map (includes example character)
- Students select a character from the movie and complete a mind map featuring movie details (personality, motivation, relationships, role, quotes, favorite scenes, etc.), a personal “Movie-to-Self” connection, and a growth mindset reflection using the phrase “I haven’t figured it out… YET.”
This historical movie is based on a true story, set in Nazi Germany during World War II. It follows a German teenager, Helmuth Hübener, who secretly listens to forbidden foreign radio broadcasts and begins to question the propaganda around him. As he shares what he learns, he discovers how dangerous it is to seek and spread the truth in a society built on fear, surveillance, and control.
