The Spiderwick Chronicles Movie Guide + Activities - Answer Keys Included

This 14 page movie guide with handouts is for the film "The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008)". This guide may also work well as a sub plan for your substitute teacher.

PART 1 – Comprehension questions in chronological order. I have made three sets for differentiation. The multiple choice questions may also work well with ESL/ELL students. Answer keys included.

  • 45 questions requiring full sentence answers.

PART 2 – Storyboard and synopsis

  • Students to draw a 9 scene storyboard of what they believe to be the most important parts in the movie. To include a brief description for each scene. Remind students they can look at the movie questions to help with the sequences.
  • Using their storyboards as guides, students to write a synopsis of the movie.

PART 3 – Creativity

  • Students to imagine they are an assistant to Arthur Spiderwick. They have to write a profile of a magical creature which can either be a known (as seen in the movie) or unknown creature (using their imagination). To include a picture of the creature.
  • Continuing on from the previous assignment, students to write about the habitat and daily routine for the magical creature. To include a picture of its dwelling place.

Based on the books by Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi, the movie follows the adventures of twin brothers Jared and Simon Grace and sister Mallory. After moving into the run-down Spiderwick Estate with their mother they find themselves pulled into an alternate world full of faeries and other magical creatures.

PART 2 – Writing and creativity

  • The first task involves the students writing a little bit about one of the ghosts in the movie. They choose one of the four listed names, then draw a picture of that ghost and complete the questions. Students also need to write the name in to the correct box as well as the correct pronouns and possessive pronouns.
  • Students to imagine they are a journalist for a made-up magazine. They have been tasked to interview one of the ghosts and need to write 10 questions and made-up answers. Students should try to stay in line with the personality of the ghost as depicted in the movie.

The movie is about a ghost therapist and his daughter Kat, who move in to an old mansion to try and get rid of the ghosts that haunt it. During their stay, Kat meets a friendly but lonely ghost named Casper who develops a crush on her.
