Franklin TV Guide Episode Three + Activities | Pride and Gout | Answer Key Included

PART 1 – Comprehension questions in chronological order. I have made two sets for differentiation. The multiple choice questions may also work well with ESL/ELL students. Answer keys included.

PART 2 – Storyboard, synopsis and discussion questions.

  • Students to draw a 9 scene storyboard of what they believe to be the most important parts in the episode. To include a brief description for each scene. Remind students they can look at the episode questions to help with the sequences.
  • Using their storyboards as guides, students to write a synopsis of the episode.
  • 5 thought provoking questions to be used as a class discussion. May work well if completed in pairs first then shared with the rest of the class. Includes example/suggested answers.

About the Episode

Continuing his mission to convince France to join against England, Dr. Franklin tries to figure out what to do after his printing press is destroyed. News arrives about Temple’s friend who went to fight in America and Dr. Franklin has extra work to do as he gets ridiculed following a speech.

Franklin is a biographical drama miniseries about the United States Founding Father Benjamin Franklin. Based on Stacy Schiff's 2005 book "A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America."

PART 2 – Storyboard and synopsis.

  • Students to draw a 9 scene storyboard of what they believe to be the most important parts in the movie. To include a brief description for each scene. Remind students they can look at the movie questions to help with the sequences.
  • Using their storyboards as guides, students to write a synopsis of the movie.

PART 3 – Character writing and creative writing.

  • Students to write about one of the characters following the question prompts and to include a drawing of their chosen character.
  • Using the end of the battle as a starting point, students to write a short account of the journey of two characters.

- Bilbo, as he makes his way back to Hobbiton.

- Legolas, as he heads North to find the Dunedain.

(This task could also be extended further to include Bain and his family, the Dwarves of Erebor, Tauriel etc…)

Based on the novel by J.R.R. Tolkien. In continuation from the previous movie, Bilbo and his fellow companions are forced to engage in a war against an array of combatants and keep the Lonely Mountain from falling into the hands of a rising darkness.

Follow Bilbo and his friends as they make way to search out the Secret Door to the mountain, and one step closer to taking back the stolen Arkenstone, and the Dwarves’ home.

  • Students to use their imagination and create a kind of profile page for one of the spirits visiting the bathhouse. Needs to include a drawing, describing it, type of bath had and the customer's review of their experience at the bathhouse.
  • Students to imagine they are Chihiro's friend and have been asked to write about her experience at the spirit bathhouse. Students need to include 2 drawings and write about any part of Chihiro's experience that was witnessed in the movie.

Studio Ghibli's most famous work by Hayao Miyazaki. The movie is about a young girl named Chihiro who accidently becomes trapped in a mysterious world. As she navigates this strange realm, she must fend for herself as she encounters strange spirits, assorted creatures and a grumpy sorceress who seeks to prevent her from returning to the human world.

  • This has 2 parts. Students to imagine they’re junior reporters in the city. After hearing news of a teenage hacker who almost started WW3, the students will create an imaginary interview with him. Need to write 5 questions with David’s full responses for each.
  • Using the information from the previous part, students need to incorporate and reword David’s answers into a dramatic sounding newspaper article. Include a drawing.

About the movie

The movie is about young computer whiz kid David Lightman, who while looking for the newest computer game invertedly logs into a top secret super-computer. Believing he'd found some new games, David challenges the computer to play a war game which brings about some unexpected consequences.
