This guide may also work well as a sub plan for your substitute teacher.
PART 1 – Comprehension questions in chronological order. I have made two sets for differentiation. The multiple choice questions may also work well with ESL/ELL students. Answer keys included.
- 34 questions requiring full sentence answers.

PART 2 – Class discussion questions
- 5 Critical thinking questions for students to complete then to be discussed as a class for further analysis. Includes example answers.
PART 3 – Storyboard and synopsis
- Students to draw a 9 scene storyboard of what they believe to be the most important parts in the movie. To include a brief description for each scene. Remind students they can look at the movie questions to help with the sequences.
- Using their storyboards as guides, students to write a synopsis of the movie.
PART 4 – News article writing
- Students to imagine they are amateur reporters who visit the baseball field built inside the cornfield and write an article on it. They need to “interview” Ray Kinsella for his story and some of the guests to find out why they decided to visit, then write down important notes from the interviews.
- Using the notes, students then go on to write an exciting article, which also includes a drawing and quotes from the interviews.
Based on the novel Shoeless Joe by W. P. Kinsella. The movie is about Iowa farmer Ray Kinsella and the quest he follows after hearing a voice in his cornfield say to him "If you build it, he will come".
