PART 1 – Comprehension questions in chronological order. I have made three sets for differentiation. The multiple choice questions may also work well with ESL/ELL students. Answer keys included.
- 45 questions requiring full sentence answers.
- 30 questions requiring full sentence answers (15 removed from the 45 question set)
- 30 multiple choice questions with 3 possible answers
PART 2 – Storyboard and synopsis
- Students to draw a 9 scene storyboard of what they believe to be the most important parts in the movie. To include a brief description for each scene. Remind students they can look at the movie questions to help with the sequences.
- Using their storyboards as guides, students to write a synopsis of the movie.
PART 3 – News article writing
- Students to imagine they are junior reporters who go visit West Point Academy to interview a cadet named Edgar A. Poe. In the first part they write notes on the imaginary interview in preparation to write a short news article, which will include questions and answers from Mr. Poe.
- Using the notes, students to write an informative article, which also includes a drawing and quotes from the interview.
Based on the novel by Louis Bayard, the movie follows Mr. Landor, a weary detective who is hired to investigate the murder of a cadet at the US Military Academy at West Point. Embarking on a challenging, time-sensitive mission to collect clues, he enlists one of their own to help unravel the case, a young man named Edgar Allan Poe.
