This 16 page movie guide with additional activities accompanies the film "Gattaca (1997)".

This guide may also work well as a sub plan for your substitute teacher.

PART 1 – Comprehension questions in chronological order. I have made three sets for differentiation. The multiple choice questions may also work well with ESL/ELL students. Answer keys included.

• 45 questions requiring full sentence answers.
• 30 questions requiring full sentence answers (15 removed from the 45 question set)
• 30 multiple choice questions with 3 possible answers

PART 2 – Storyboard and synopsis

• Students to draw a 9 scene storyboard of what they believe to be the most important parts in the movie. To include a brief description for each scene. Remind students they can look at the movie questions to help with the sequences.
• Using their storyboards as guides, students to write a synopsis of the movie.

PART 3 – Discussion questions. Includes some example answers.

• Students to answer seven inferential questions. The last question looking at pros and cons of genetically engineering and selecting humans could work well for a small debate.
• Students to come together as a class and share their answers.

About the movie

Society has all but removed the natural birthing process and now relies on genetically engineering humans to enhance abilities and remove genetic disorders. The movie follows the life of Vincent, one of the few humans born naturally, and his journey to fulfil his ambition of travelling to space. The problem is his genetic makeup means he can only apply for menial jobs, and must do something drastic to achieve his dream of space travel.
