The Secret of NIMH Movie Guide + Activities | Answer Keys Inc

This 14 page movie guide with additional activities accompanies the film "The Secret of NIMH (1982)".

PART 1 – Comprehension questions in chronological order. I have made three sets for differentiation. The multiple choice questions may also work well with ESL/ELL students. Answer keys included.

  • 35 questions requiring full sentence answers.
  • 25 questions requiring full sentence answers (10 removed from the 35 question set).
  • 25 multiple choice questions with 3 possible answers.

PART 2 – Storyboard and synopsis

  • Students to draw a 9 scene storyboard of what they believe to be the most important parts in the movie. To include a brief description for each scene. Remind students they can look at the movie questions to help with the sequences.
  • Synopsis. Using their storyboards as guides, students to write a synopsis of the movie.

PART 3 – Creativity and character writing

  • Students are tasked in helping design the inside and outside of Mrs. Brisby's home after moving to the safe side of the rock. This can be like a floor plan showing rooms in the house and the features in the garden. To include a key.
  • Students to write a little bit about their favorite character in the movie. Includes describing them, writing about their personality and what the student liked and disliked about them. To include a drawing of the character.

About the movie

Based on the novel (Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH) by Robert C. O'Brien, the movie follows a field mouse named Mrs. Brisby. Faced with a difficult task of finding a new home due to the farmer's spring plough and the impossibility of moving her very ill son Timothy, Mrs. Brisby seeks aid from an unlikely set of animals and learns of a secret about her late husband.

  • Students to imagine they are at a school in the Bureau of Genetic Welfare and have been tasked to write an exciting article about the newcomers for the school paper. Imagining they've already interviewed them on arrival, they go on to write the article about the newcomers’ initial thoughts of living there and what they're looking forward to. To include quotes from the interviews and a drawing. (note: this is prior to any of them finding out about the reality of the Bureau and the Council)

Based on the novel by Veronica Roth, the movie is set in a futuristic dystopia where society is divided into five factions. Continuing on from the previous movie Insurgent, Tris and her friends make their plan to escape beyond the wall to find out the truth of the world around them.

  • Pair work. For each of the characters mentioned, students to write what they believe are important questions that need to be answered. Once done they swap their sheets with their partner and write a detailed answer to their partners questions, as though they are taking the place of the character. Finally, the students return the sheets back to their partner. Can be read out as a class and discussed together.
  • Students to write about one of the characters following the question prompts and to include a drawing of their chosen character.

After reaching 16, teenagers must choose to either stay in their faction of birth, or transfer into another faction. The movie follows Beatrice as she discovers something extremely rare about herself.
