Practical Magic Movie Guide + Activities | Halloween | Worksheets | Answer Key Included

This 14 page movie guide with additional activities accompanies the Halloween film "Practical Magic (1998)".

PART 1 – Comprehension questions in chronological order. I have made three sets for differentiation. The multiple choice questions may also work well with ESL/ELL students. Answer keys included.

  • 55 questions requiring full sentence answers.
  • 35 questions requiring full sentence answers (20 removed from the 55 question set)
  • 35 multiple choice questions with 3 possible answers.

PART 2 – Storyboard and synopsis

  • Students to draw a 9 scene storyboard of what they believe to be the most important parts in the movie. To include a brief description for each scene. Remind students they can look at the movie questions to help with the sequences.
  • Using their storyboards as guides, students to write a synopsis of the movie.

PART 3 – Creative writing

  • Students to write imaginary diary entry for each of the following. For Aunt Jet on the day when Gilly and Sally first arrive at the house as children. For Sally on the day Gilly moves out of the family home with her boyfriend. For Gilly on the evening of Halloween when they dressed up as witches.
  • Students to imagine they are researching the Owens Family background and stumble upon their Grimoire. They notice an unusual potion inside and decide to make a replica of it. Students need to draw a visual of the potion, what it's for, what it does and the directions on how to make it.

Based on the novel by Alice Hoffman, the movie follows two sisters, Sally and Gillian Owens, who come from a family of witches with a curse that dooms any man they fall in love with to an untimely death. The film blends magic with themes of sisterhood and self-discovery

  • Students to imagine they're junior reporters and need to write an article about what happened at Blackpool pier. Need to include a drawing and quotes from imaginary interviews with local witnesses.

Based on the novel by Ransom Riggs, the movie follows Jake, who after hearing strange fables from his grandpa about peculiar children, decides to investigate if they're true or not. As he delves deeper into the mystery, Jake learns something he wasn’t expecting.

  • Students to imagine Kiki is asking them for help in designing an advertising flyer for her delivery service. Needs to at least include contact information, specific services included, a catchy slogan and decoration (as well as pictures)

PART 3 – Creative writing: News article

  • Students to imagine they are junior reporters and have been tasked to write a story on either the saving of Tombo or Kiki’s new delivery service. Students to conduct an (imaginary) interview with Kiki and anyone else involved in the story, then go on to write a heartwarming article. To include interview quotes and a picture.

The movie is about Kiki, a witch who's just turned 13 and now obligated to leave home to find a new town to live and her place in the world. From the famed Studio Ghibli studio, this is a light-hearted alternative Halloween movie.
