Encanto Movie Guide + Activities - Answer Key Included

This 11 page movie guide with handouts accompanies the film "Encanto (2021)". This guide will also work well as a sub plan for your substitute teacher.

PART 1 – Comprehension questions in chronological order. I have made two sets for differentiation. The multiple choice questions may also work well with ESL/ELL students or a more focused younger group. Answer keys included.

PART 2 – Favorite character and sentence writing.

  • Favorite character writing - Students to write a little bit about their favorite character in the movie. Includes describing them, writing about their personality and what the student liked and disliked about them. Also need to draw them.

This 14 page movie guide with handouts accompanies the animation film "The Gruffalo (2009)". This guide will also work well as a sub plan for your substitute teacher.

PART 1 – Comprehension questions in chronological order (15 or 25 questions) 2 sets of questions depending on the grade or challenge. The multiple choice questions will also work well with ESL/ELL students. Answer keys included.

PART 2 – Writing activities and Word Search

• The second section is for students to draw their favorite character and write a little bit about them following the question prompts.

The film is based on the bestselling book by Julia Donaldson. It tells the story of a little brown mouse who, while searching for food in the woods encounters upon some hungry animals who want to gobble him up. Using his vibrant imagination, the mouse conjures up a monstrous creature to scare them away...

PART 2 – Creative writing

• Students to imagine they’ve been asked to document Brian’s experience. First they draw an area map of his camp and important features and explain his reasons for why he chose that particular area. Followed by a short write up of Brian's thoughts and feelings on the first day and night.

• Students to write a newspaper article about Brian using the information from the previous task. Needs to include a drawing.

PART 3 – Storyboard and Synopsis

• Students to draw a 6 scene storyboard of what they believe to be the most important parts in the movie. To include a brief description for each scene. Remind students they can look at the movie questions to remind them of the sequences

• Synopsis. Using their storyboards as guides, students to write a synopsis of the movie.

Based on the book Hatchet, written by Gary Paulsen, the movie is about 13-year-old Brian who is the sole survivor of an unreported plane crash. Alone in the wilderness, Brian must learn to survive by his wits, find food and shelter, and brave wild animals

PART 3 – Word fun and word search

• There is a word bank with 15 words related to the movie to use in this part. For the first section students to unscramble the words from the word bank. Next is drawing a line through the letters spelling one of the words. Last of all is answering questions and clues to find the words.

PART 4 – Storyboard and Synopsis (older grades)

• Storyboard - Students to draw a 9 scene storyboard of what they believe to be the most important parts in the movie. To include a brief description for each scene. Remind students they can look at the movie questions to remind them of the sequences.

Marking idea for the comprehension questions

When the students have finished the questions, they swap their work with their friends to mark. We go through together as a class, taking it in turns to ask and answer questions. Students can also check grammar and spelling if more advanced, and then rechecked by the teacher.

Based on the children's book written by Margery Williams, the movie tells the story of a little boy left with his grandmother due to his father's work. After a brief exploration of the house, young Toby finds his father's old play room and a present left by his mother, a velveteen rabbit. Full of imagination, Toby and Rabbit go on an adventure together.

PART 2 – Creativity (writing and design)

• Students to imagine they’ve stumbled upon a secret garden surrounded by walls. They then have to draw a plan of the garden and include the entrance, lots of flowers, trees, foliage, ornaments and anything else they think would look good in the garden. They need to label it too.

• Students to close their eyes and imagine they’re opening the gate to their secret garden. They visualize walking around and write in detail everything they can see and hear in the space provided.

• Students to describe in detail what their three favorite parts in their garden look like and why they're so special. They also need to include a picture.

Based on the 1911 novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, the movie is about a young girl named Mary Lennox, who after being sent back to England from India, goes to live on her Uncle Lord Craven's estate. It is a fairly isolated existence and she has to find things to keep herself occupied, which includes finding a secret garden.
